You know, there is a strong contingent in Turkey that considers the atomic weapons that the United States keeps under our control there to be their nuclear weapons as well...
Incirlik AB has seen a decrease in activity with most of the nuclear ordnance allegedly shipped of to Souda Base, Crete years ago. It's part of an adaptation in US/NATO policy due to shifts in geostrategic realities and concerns over Turkish duplicity.
Despite superficial differences Turkish and US macro views so far overlap on basically every issue. Hence why Turkey and the US are nearly always on the same side, see Syria, Iraq, Libya, Nagorno Karabakh, Ukraine, Somalia and before that Chechnya, Bosnia, Kosovo etc.
Turkey is currently acting in a supportive role, as expected quiet as a church mouse about the massive US reliance on its infrastructure. Most of the US intel gathering on Iran's Western flank is conducted from Turkish bases, most notably Konya AB which houses many airborne US intel gathering assets, and Kurecik radarbase. The US daily flies AWACS sorties from Konya AB up to the Turkish-Iranian border, Kurecik is one of the US main stations used for early detection and estimated trajectory of Iranian ballistics. These bases are much more relevant than al Udeid or the ones Bahrain or Saudi Arabia.
If the Iranian position deteriorates further Turkey become more open and assertive. On the condition that things actually reach that point. Turkey will focus on the Iranian Azeris. The Azeri-Turkey tandem has long been meddling in Iran's Turkic Northwest, trying to position themselves as the guarantors and benefactors of the Azeri minority in Iran. Aliyev especially is an Azeri irredentist who near weekly barks about Azerbaijan's flawed borders. Aka historical Soviet injustices, random and faulty borders in the FSU, and oppression of Azeri minority in Iran. The term 'Whole Azerbaijan' has become common since Nagorno Karabakh was concluded.
Obviously this open interference did not go down well with the ayatollahs. Pezeshkian is Azeri, Khamenei a half Azeri and so many other Iranian bigwigs so one could ask the question how much protection Azeris need anyway. The Islamic Republic is not Persian centric and instead adheres to Twelver Shia Khomeinism, a religion that was brought to Iran in the 17th century by the Turkic Qizilbash/ Red hats and was later expanded by the Turkic Safavids into Central Asia and the Arab World, before Iran became Shia many Turkic dynasties like the Qara Qoyunlu ruled Iran.
The next stage will be indicated by a change in rhetorics, the big giveaway will be a sudden distinction between 'South Azerbaijan and' North Azerbaijan'/ The Republic of Azerbaijan. If Aliyev and Erdo suddenly start talking about the plight of the South Azeris you know it's on.
