Decline of Functioning Society

I don't ever see myself living in a rural area. Just not in my nature. But I do see in this thread the tension we all face. We don't like how modern technology and convenience dehumanizes us, but we sure do enjoy the benefits of it. I'm sure everyone on this forum enjoys their cars, microwaves, fridges, computers, phones, etc. I like being able to buy books with 1 press of a button online than having to travel library to library in search of them. I like being able to order exactly what I need from Amazon rather than hoping that a mom and pop shop in town has it. But I don't like that I'm giving money to the guys at the top and neglecting the little guy. Even if you do go out to a little town and travel back a decade, it's only a matter of time before the modern world will catch up to you.

I honestly do not worry about that at all at this point.

I would say at this point that the majority of small business owners are scumbags who run their businesses with minimal staff causing poor customer service while also hiring third world immigrants (instead of locals) and paying them dog-shit wages which again both lowers customer service and puts locals out of a job. Why would I go out of my way to support men like this?

Fair enough. But I would postulate that one's "nature" is primarily comprised of one's modern societal conditioning to be a consumer of plastic thingamajiggies made in China which is unnatural. Our true nature is that of living in small, close knit tribes in the woods without electricity and gas powered engines to do the daily, heaving lifting that our hands were created by God to do. Seperate a human from developing skilled hands, and a slave/serf class is the inevitable outcome. And this is where we find ourselves, beholden to things and people outside of our tribe (immigrant labor and the government) because we no longer have the skill sets and personal resources (large swaths of untouched land) to survive without them.

I do enjoy these things but they are not necessary, and often a hindrance to my overall well being and happiness. It takes some time and reconditioning, but there comes a time when one has been living in the woods long enough where you can be sitting on your porch watching trees blowing in the wind and you experience the same type of adrenalaine rush as speeding down the autobahn in a Ferrari or playing your favorite video game.
Even if you do go out to a little town and travel back a decade, it's only a matter of time before the modern world will catch up to you.
That is why one must go beyond the little town and deep into the wilderness. This will take you back thousands of years where the modern world has never been and never will be.

You don't have to live there permanently, but it's nice to have a little cabin deep in the woods as a spiritual retreat from The World. And the good news is, the farther out you go, the cheaper the land gets.

Do not tar us all with the same brush. It's insulting and you have no idea what you're talking about.

Reread what I said I said majority of small business owners I did not say all.

I believe that 95% of small business owners are as I described.

Maybe 5% of small business owners are decent people. I am sure you and most of the small business owners on this forum are in that 5% I am not disputing that but frankly I am not going out of my way to give my money to small businesses just to support the 5% that do the right thing.

You can do a bit of both. If you're near the Midwest there's a decent number of towns where can find little bedroom communities within a 20 or even 10 minute drive of the Metro area.

I recommend it if you can. Your neighborhood and community will be more of a rural mindset, but urban amenities are easily available.

So what's your plan then? You keep giving your money to corporates who care even less about their staff?

I grew up around a major city, couldn't stand it and love rural areas now. It's not just the Trump signs, but all the open space and nicer people. It seems like a higher percentage of people take their families to church too.

easy c gave a good suggestion on trying to find a compromise. Some mid sized cities that I've been to and highly recommend are Grand Rapids and Boise. Colorado Springs and Spokane are ok too.

Large corporations treat their staff badly also but they still treat their staff better than 95% of small businesses do. I would definitely say large corporations on average treat their staff better (and pay them more) than small businesses do.

I have worked for both small and large companies. Large companies often pay better, often are more flexible in regards to working hours (easier to do with a larger team of staff), plus as much as management still suck at large companies at least the mere existence of a HR department keeps their actions at least partially in check and limits the amount of abuse they can dish out to staff as they know you can report them to HR. I have previously butted heads with psychopathic/idiot managers at large corporations and occasionally managed to win. You aren't going to win against a small business owner unless you go to the extraordinary length of getting lawyers involved.

If a small business owner is a nasty piece of work what can you do about it other than sue them or go to the regulators which is a much higher hurdle to surpass.

I have been reading about how Trumps election is splitting families and ruining relationships. Do you guys think there’s a chance we’re simply too dumb for democracy? “We the People” only works with an educated population with healthy, strong families. As the decline in intelligence continues and people become individualistic - I guess more spoiled would be a better term - is it time we start experimenting with less democratic forms of government like limited sufferage, monarchy, or technocracy? I know we complain about elites a lot but would our society be better off under a technocracy?

Unfortunately. We’re not close but I know one gal who said if Trump wins she’s leaving her husband. And true to her word, she’s lawyering up. On the socials one guy mentioned he got uninvited to holiday festivities over the Donald. If it’s this bad, why are people voting? I think I’d rather live in a society where the cooler heads do all the heavy lifting and government is something the sheeple have little to no say in unless they can prove they’re worth it.

I know one crazy chick too who flipped out after the election. Just one....out of all the people I know. Does one crazy person in your life make you think the entire country is trashed? I think we are good brother.

We all know by now how skewed these polls are, they are worthless. Do the majority of women in your life think killing their babies is the most important issues? For me it's definitely the opposite...
I bought this up in another thread. It’s 35-70 yo women who make killing their baby the main issue. Sub 35 women are more worried about their paycheck being gobbled up by rent and jobs.

Majority of ones in my life?

No.

Majority of the women I went to business school with?

Yes.

Majority of random you encounter out there?

Yes.

The way you word this question isn't really a good bench mark because most of us will be cultivating different associations than is the average.
