The J. D. Vance Thread

He's been great in all his media appearances lately. He's honestly a much more effective communicator than Trump himself at this point. The people ragging on him as a bad pick continue to look like complete idiots.
I disagree. He has stuck his foot in his mouth a few times, the worst being discussing war with Iran. He needs to tone the super pro-Israel talk down, for the next 7 weeks, or he could still blow the election for Trump.

Leftist blogger Ken Klippenstein published a dossier on J.D Vance that was put together when he was being considered for the VP spot

The dossier has been offered to me and I’ve decided to publish it because it’s of keen public interest in an election season. It’s a 271-page research paper the Trump campaign prepared to vet now vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance. As far as I can tell, it hasn’t been altered, but even if it was, its contents are publicly verifiable. I’ll let it speak for itself.

The points being highlighted just makes me like JD even more

Instead, the Vance Dossier enumerates pretty reasonable liabilities as a then-contender for VP nominee, including:

  • “Vance has been one of the chief obstructionists to U.S. efforts to providing [sic] assistance to Ukraine.”
  • “Vance criticized public health experts and elected officials for supporting Black Lives Matter protests while condemning anti-lockdown [Covid] protests.”
  • “Vance ‘embraced non-interventionism.’”
  • “In 2020, Vance criticized President Trump’s airstrike killing Iranian General Qasem Soleimani, worrying it would continue to bog down America in the Middle East to the advantage of China. Vance suggested that the country had been entangled in wars in the Middle East so ‘financial elites’ could profit from the rise of China.”

Do people here think JD Vance was the best pick.

I don’t have any real problem with him, but I wonder if Ben Carson or Tim Scott would help him get more black votes.

So I guess I’m asking: is using a black VP to get votes stooping to the Dems level?

There is no perfect pick. That much is obvious. I would go further and say there is no best pick either. Carson and Scott both have strengths and weaknesses. I can't see that either would be clearly better than Vance.

Vance has weaknesses, but his brand of being able to relate to the poor working class fits Trump's message well, and he is a pretty good spesker.

One of the unspoken truths about who is selected as VP running mate, is that the person makes the President look like a much better choice. On the surface it's supposed to make them look like a great team, a dynamic duo, but the reality is different. The VP pick is supposed to make people think twice before "removing the President suddenly" *ahem*, because the VP is either incredibly stupid and unlikeable (viz. Kamelface), or in Vance's case, because the VP is far more conservative or hard-core.

Depends. If trumps plan was to have Vance be his successor in 2028, that’s probably a good plan.

But if he loses in 2024 then it wasn’t a good plan

Are you implying his chances in 2024 increase with a black VP?

I’m implying Vance is like a younger version of Trump. I don’t know that winning the black vote was ever a viable strategy, but if enough registered democrats and left leaning independents stay home instead of vote for Harris on Election Day then the yes a win.

I imagine the best strategy where Trump could make gains would be with female voters. I’m not sure a female vp pick would even accomplish that. Who would he have chosen? I like Tulsi.

Edit it’s somewhat a moot point, Vance is the running mate

A weakness he had in the beginning was being awkward and not speaking well but he's really improved on that in just a short period of time. I always thought he would be better as some sort of influencer behind the scene - like a cabinet member or some of wonky position but he's really gotten better at working the media.

Thanks for the heads up. It probably would be been great entertainment, and I will still watch, but I fear it will be "who loves Israel more" fest, after today's attack by Iran.

And of course Iran/Israel was the very first question the moderators brought up lol.

I think Vance is off to a strong start. He's a good speaker and although the debate has just started, he seems like he prepared well.
