The J. D. Vance Thread

It certainly seems like Trump picked Vance because he’s a younger version of himself . I don’t know if there was more to it than that.

Just from watching the past ten or so years, that would probably be enough for Trump at this point

What gives you the impression he's intending to use him as a token. Given the experience he had with Pence, it's clear he sees the difference in-between a token and an effective surrogate this time around.
I don't believe Trump is intending to keep Vance as a token. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt that he learned his lesson from last time. I hope Vance has a much larger say in the admin than Pence did. The VP has always been little more than both a token and insurance, but since Trump is past his prime, it would be good for someone wiser to do more of the heavy lifting.

I think Trump's gonna keep Trumping...but I suspect the team this go around will be comprised on better administrators like Vance.

Saying He's past his prime is pretty speculative....He's not going to step aside and let Vance run things, but I would suspect he will use Vance in ways he wouldn't use Pence for sure.

Dude. If Trump wins then Vance is a heartbeat away. I mean Trump works at McDonald’s and doesn’t look to eat healthy
Trump is not a young, healthy man. That's for sure. He is still sharp, and he has incredible energy to campaign like a machine. Still, the probability of him having a severe health issue before 2028 is pretty high. Being president is draining. It makes young men go grey.

I'll be very happy to have Vance as VP. His ideas are different from Trump's but we have to fight with the politicians we have.

It's one thing to "get it" and another thing to "get it done". He has zero accomplishments in the senate. I don't think he has ever even taken a bold stance on an issue.

Honestly, accomplishments in the Senate are completely overrated. Most Senators have no control over what happens in there, and everyone's ego is so huge that no one is influenced by anyone else.

Senators' votes are fairly predictable and do not have much impact. I think the only accomplishment of being a senator is making it to the senate. Once you're there, it's a boring job with little to do.

It's wild to me to see you guys overrate him. His record speaks for itself. Being polite and well-spoken isn't enough- not even close.

Just finished Hillbilly Elegy which I greatly enjoyed. A criticism that was leveled at the book was that he too harsh on the "hillibillies" around him and I do think in the book he did place more blame on the culture and personal choices of the people around them for their poverty rather then larger wide-spread effects though he doesn't neglect that either. He talks about the Armco steel factory in his town that allowed his grandparents to build a middle-class existence and how it's shut down devastated the town. If there's one thing he does think makes a big difference on whether someone ends up as a statistic and who mangers gets out of their situation it would be having family/social support. He thought the reason he didn't fall into a pit is because he had his grandparents around to provide a support and that all the other people he knew that managed to stay on the straight path all had similar support - even if they didn't rise to the heights he managed to.

Thanks. Excellent summary. He really does come across as very relatable. Even the style in which he wrote the book isn't academic at all, despite having graduated from Yale. Very refreshing. But what's even more refreshing is that he doesn't even mention this stuff in an effort to get sympathy from or achieve an emotional connection to voters.

Anyway, I think it does give him a unique angle. In fact, similarly to what I said in the Trump thread, the core visible members, like Trump, Elon, Vance, all have captivating stories in their own regard

I'm 30mins in to this podcast with Vance. He seems relatively normal. I'm impressed.
Same. I was disappointed with the VP choice at first, but that was because I didn't know anything about him. Vance is about as normal as it gets for a politician. This is the kind of guy that should be backing Trump up and taking his place if anything terrible happens. I think he is sincerely conservative. And sincerely has Trump's back, unlike Pence.

I did not read his book. However, I grew up a few blocks from him. My sister went to school with him. They were in the same class. When he released his book I asked my sister if she knew JD Vance. She insisted she didn’t know a JD Vance. I was skeptical of his sudden rise, especially since my sister didn’t know him and they supposedly graduated the same year. I thought he was a plant, especially when he was critical of Donald Trump.

When Ron Howard started making the movie I was talking to my family when they were in town, and by that time, my sister realized that JD Vance was the JD she grew up with. She was unaware that he took his grandparents last name after they graduated. Then, my other sister realized that she was friends with JD’s sister, Lindsay. They had different last names.

JD had a lot of media coverage around here throughout the years and I grew to appreciate his commentary. I wasn’t aware of the spiritual transformation he was going through, but I could tell there was something different about him.

I went to the rally he had here after the RNC. I will say that I saw a lot of my coworkers in MAGA hats. We didn’t have a chance of getting into the auditorium. However, it was very similar to tailgating so we stayed around. I noticed that the SS started gathering in the corner and began moving barricades. I could tell that something was going on. Then, JD’s motorcade pulled up. He got out to talk to us. Once he saw how many people were outside of the event he came over to thank us.

This is a big deal for us here in the rust belt.

This is hilarious, and the comments on that post are like an RVF family reunion.

However, I think this is DT using poetic license. There weren't that many International Playboy tier RVF members, and I don't see Vance having the time to be that guy in his life story.

There was indeed a user named “Vance” and he posted a lot in the travel section. No idea if it’s jd Vance the current vice president elect
