The J. D. Vance Thread

I don’t really care if Vance has a Hindu wife. She isn’t trying to convert him. Though I am curious if their kids end up Hindu or Christian

My only real problem with Vance is if he shaves his beard (look at his older photos, without his beard he will be like Samson with short hair, at least that’s my fear)

Seriously he’d go from a massive chad to a massive chode

I'm about 2 hours in and I'll add my voice to the chorus of people saying this is better then the Trump interview. I think it's pretty obvious that JD is interested in ideas in a way that Trump isn't and also has an intellectual curiosity that Trump doesn't have.

I listened to his JRE for almost 20 minutes and then I turned it off due to boredom. I'm not sure what you guys see in this man.

Vance is remarkably composed, intelligent and well-spoken when compared to the average national politician. He also "gets it" on a lot of issues that Republicans are typically out to lunch on, for example he's very critical of big tech and big business in general when they operate against the interests of the American people. He has all the potential in the world to pick up Trump's mantle and run with it, and the acumen he's shown thus far - still very early in his political career - suggests that he will be extremely effective going forward. The fact that you got bored after listening to him for 20 minutes says more about you than it does about him.

I agree. Vance is really smart and really good at understanding issues at a deep level. I think he would make an amazing President.

The thing that Trump is a master at is emotionally appealing to people, as illustrated by @Judoka 's "logical discussion is boring to my feefees" post above ^^

The average voter is like that though. Vance is somewhat of a cerebral guy (though obviously he does have a fair amount of charm too), so I think he'll need to work on his Trump/Obama-esque "demagogue" emotional appeal in order to be President. He's got plenty of time to do that though, and I think there's a good chance he's smart enough to figure out how to do that.

The days of having a deep-thinker like Vance in the number one spot are long gone, if they ever really existed. The philosopher-king was always a pipe dream when it came to realpolitik. People respond more to pathos than they do to logos, which is why the democrats have come so far so fast. That said, it would be great if Trump would fully utilize Vance in his number two spot, rather than keep him around as a token.

Dude. If Trump wins then Vance is a heartbeat away. I mean Trump works at McDonald’s and doesn’t look to eat healthy

What gives you the impression he's intending to use him as a token. Given the experience he had with Pence, it's clear he sees the difference in-between a token and an effective surrogate this time around.

It's one thing to "get it" and another thing to "get it done". He has zero accomplishments in the senate. I don't think he has ever even taken a bold stance on an issue.

he's very critical of big tech and big business in general when they operate against the interests of the American people.

It's all talk. A lot of Republicans are critical about big tech and they have no intention of taking any action, and nor should they. Historically, Republicans are pro big business while working to reduce regulation.

He has all the potential in the world to pick up Trump's mantle and run with it, and the acumen he's shown thus far - still very early in his political career - suggests that he will be extremely effective going forward.

It's wild to me to see you guys overrate him. His record speaks for itself. Being polite and well-spoken isn't enough- not even close.

The fact that you got bored after listening to him for 20 minutes says more about you than it does about him.

I realized fairly quickly that it wasn't worth my time to continue listening. Mainstream Republicans with no accomplishments just don't inspire me.
