The future of flying

Both fuel selectors were switched to 'cutoff' within seconds of each other on the climbout, causing both engines to die.

One pilot can be heard on the cockpit voice recorder asking the other why he cut off the fuel. "The other pilot responded that he did not do so," the report said.
It did not identify which remarks were made by the flight's captain and which by the first officer, nor which pilot transmitted "Mayday, Mayday, Mayday" just before the crash.

Seems very likely to be a case of suicide, sad stuff.

A Delta Air Lines flight bound for Atlanta made an emergency landing Friday at LAX after a reported engine fire, officials said.

The Boeing 767 engine caught fire shortly after takeoff around 2 p.m. Video from the ground captured the flames coming out from one of the engines. The flight landed safely after returning to the LAX runway.

The FAA is investigating the incident, according to Delta Air Lines. The cause of the fire is still unclear.

NEW: Delta pilot makes an "aggressive maneuver" to avoid colliding with a B-52 bomber above Minot, North Dakota.

New audio footage captured by a passenger onboard the plane reveals what exactly happened, according to the pilot.

"Given his speed ... I don't know how fast they were going, but they were a lot faster than us, I felt it was the safest thing to do to turn behind it," the pilot said.

"So sorry about the aggressive maneuver, it caught me by surprise, this is not normal at all. I don't know why they didn't give us a heads up, because the Air Force base does have radar..."

"Not a fun day at work."

People! Leave your luggage on the plane, you can retrieve it later!

If your belongings don't burn in the fire, then it will be many days until you get it back until all investigations are concluded.
Being without ID, money, credit cards and a mobile phone puts you into a totally helpless state nowadays.

I understand why people take things....but bringing very large pieces of luggage is still retarded and dangerous.

If the plane just departed Burbank, and it was near Burbank, the seatbelt sign was on. No one should have been unbuckled, including probably the flight attendants.

Most people, even frequent flyers, have never experienced severe or extreme turbulence (but think they have), and get complacent. Anything can happen sometimes with no warning…broken arms, wrists, vertebrae, and hips, if you hit the ceiling then get slammed into the seat or floor with 3x your body weight at 3x the speed of normal falling. Most people get on a plane and can’t imagine the 300# galley beverage cart bouncing off the ceiling, but it can happen.

Also transport aircraft are rated to at least -1g…that is in the normal operating envelope, meaning no need to repair, inspect or scrap the airplane. If a pilot needs that -1g to save the airplane, he’s going to use it. That’s your full body weight going up towards the ceiling, instead of the floor,

Things can go from seemingly benign to deadly in a few short minutes. If 100 people take 1 extra second each because they have a bag, that could be many additional seconds added to what should be a 90 second evacuation, especially if some exits are unable to be used. They are killing the people behind them rather than be inconvenienced.

I'm well aware of this...but my point still stands.
