He's been an investment advisor and is still solvent and I suspect quite wealthy. Not being directly connected to the CCP gives him credibility, when he says Chinese numbers are fake he must have seen that in action since the 70s while dealing with businesses and individuals involved in the region who see what's happening on the ground. In contrast to some professors without any real world experience who've been calling for the dollar's demise for 40 years or more while it has remained king among other currencies.
His clients are foreign investors and banks. Money talks. These clients aren't going to pay millions for propaganda, or invest hundreds of millions in his fund if his advice fails to reflect real conditions and his fund underperforms.
In China more than anywhere the party selects all the winners, he's essentially interfacing between foreign investors and the Chinese government is my guess.
Those are the same arguments Russia detractors say about Putin's popularity polls, they think you would get shipped to a gulag if you respond that you're not satisfied with him.

10-20 years ago, the Chinese didn't even have a real auto industry. Today they produce over a third of the world's autos, and they're just getting started. The trajectory is clear.

I don't need them any more than Russians needed the west to be a check on the Soviet Union. They wanted to capture as much global influence as possible and install friendly dictators. I live in the US. I've had family here since late in the 19th century. Here in the NE people are happy with the way things are, with the senators they have, I live in a blue state, they're proud of that, they were happy to wear masks and get vaccines, they don't worry about greater Israel, things are to their liking.

You're undermining your argument, because mentally ill people who do very light vandalism hardly get any prison time. This guy got 17 years in jail for removing a gay flag from a church. He got nailed for going against the official state religion.

All violent criminals are mentally ill, it's an aberration. Normal people don't live or do things that way. The stated purpose of prison is to isolate those sick degenerates.
Such mental illness isn't something that would preclude one from going to trial. I've never committed any vandalism somehow, I don't feel any urges to behave like him, it's mental illness to play stupid games, he got off easy, I'm in favor of shooting trespassers if that's what it takes, if you're the property owner and catch them in the act, and feel like it.

I live in the NE, the gayest part of the country excluding CA, the people are polite and pleasant, I leave packages sitting on the front steps for days without worrying about it if i have other things on my mind- 5 or 7 days was the longest, but it's hardly ever anything above a grand in value.
No matter where or in what country, there are always things you can't say or do, that's life.

A friend who grew up in Long Is, NY was driving down the highway thereabouts- a few years before Covid- when a group of maybe 20 Chinese ship stowaways (the city still gets some marine traffic) dashed for Chinatown across the busy expressway, jumping over concrete dividers, trying not to get run over, police, border and customs agents lights all around, but they all got away, no chance to catch them. Magoo said as much, westerners don't try to desperately sneak into China.
