The sack happened in the final minutes of trash time, the Pack was up by 10 with 2min left IIRC. I doubt the Packers let Strahan sack Favre unmolested, that's just not what linemen do, letting an opponent hit their QB. I think Favre didn't fight off the sack or try to avoid it because it wasn't going to change the final outcome of that game, so he just took a knee. Favre wasn't going to take a full fledged hard sack just to protect Gastineau's record, that's kind of a silly notion. Favre earned the right to finish off that game without further damage to his body by building a comfortable margin, it is ridiculous for Gastineau to blame him for that.

Apparently Gastineau's ire is a moot point, because his record was also broken by Pittsburgh Steeler TJ Watt, who 20 years later tied Strahan's record of 22.5 sacks in a season. So his anger at Favre is misdirected.

The part about Gastineau is what it is, football was this guys life and it destroyed him.

But saying that wasn't scripted I don't agree with at all. Go watch it a few times, a playoff bound immobile qb going half speed on play action in a blowout of all things, didn't even look downfield and was already tucked then strahan slowed up when he got to him untouched and they didn't have the crazy qb protection rules they have now. It just wasn't a football play at all, it was theatre.

Fun fact- Gastineau hit on my stepmom.

Back in the 80's he was playing for the Jets. They were in town to play my hometown Colts. While he was in town, he went to a local club and my Dad was there with my stepmom.

At some point, my Dad is separated from her at the bar and Gastineau made his move, trying to get her to go with him. As my Dad tells it, Gastineau was cocky, but as soon as my Dad told him she was taken, Gastineau backed off.

My stepmom always rolled her eyes when my Dad would tell his version, but my stepmom confirmed that Gastineau did hit on her. Just not sure about the actual details.

Can't wait to talk with him tomorrow, so he can ask me for the 1000th time, "Did I ever tell you about the time Mark Gastineau hit on your stepmom?"

Man I love him.

Yea they say that now but what I read was that they had spoken just before the play and the play was specifically made for him to run into him unblocked which makes sense if you go watch it. Favre was running half speed did the weakest fake hand off I've ever seen and had already tucked wasn't looking downfield to throw at all and Strahan pulled up when he got to him....it was all at half speed go take a look at it. Last plays of a blowout they're having their immobile playoff bound QB scramble on a play action....I don't even know football like that and even I can see it's a ruse.
Favre changed the play. It was supposed to be a handoff to the RB because that's what you do in these situations. But Brett changed it so he could take it himself and lay down so Strahan could get his sack. Total BS.

It was strangely hard to find a full video of the play (just everyone talking about it)

The tight end (against the best pass rusher in the league, how does that happen???) didn't even bother getting a hand on him and runs right up to Favre.

Aikman calls it out and says it's a gimme sack.

The record is fake. and the whole play was gay.

I stand by my earlier comment.

The NFL is Fake and Gay.

I see what you're saying about this play. Still, I can't imagine any team accepting a loss of any kind, even a single sack, as a favor to the opposing team. They ought to be determined to deny the opposing team of their record, no matter how sentimental the situation might be.

If Green Bay did decide to allow a gimme sack for Strahan's sake, it should be condemned. They should always play to win no matter what. It would indeed be fake and gay.

Personally, when I look at that video, I can still imagine that Strahan just slipped past the defense and was on the QB before he could react. A large number of sacks consist of the defense slipping through the offensive line and getting on the QB as if there were no opposition at all.

They did it recently with that one college chick who was the first female basketball player anyone ever gave a shit about so all the negresses hated her. I didn't watch the game but from what I read she just shot a 3 ball over and over from "the logo" whatever the hell that means until she made it....I'm assuming from the logo on the court because it's far away so she wanted to make it dramatic. Kinda takes away from it if it isn't natural at least I thought, the other team if they had any pride could have just camped out that spot but anything for attention of course....that's all that seems to matter to most in the world these days.

Ok, agree to disagree. I felt it was laydown, but don't really want to argue the point. :D

Do note that the NFL is registered as an entertainment league. So competition and fairness come after ratings, as they've legally structured it.

^The other thing is that stats are kind of an overblown sideshow, the main thing is Ws and Ls. It's not like they fixed the game by allowing an extra sack in trash time. Game fixing does happen though with some corrupt officials and players, but more in the form of point shaving which won't affect the W/L outcome but will move money on bets.
