Call me an immoral liberal, but if my daughter wants to dress up like Elsa and walk around the neighborhood to get free candy, I don't see the harm in it. Halloween doesn't exist in our house beyond that.
Nothing good about being "young at heart". This should not be glorified. Glorify being an old curmudgeon at heart instead. Shout at those kids playing in your lawn. Keep that soccer ball that fell into your property, it is legally yours now. Scold young women for dressing immodestly. Intimidate rude people with your sturdy and heavy mahogany cane. Grandpa was right about everything.
Most of those mid-20th C winter "Christmas songs" were written by Jews.Historical nativity date moved or not - secular Christmas hurts my soul. Also, who decided to enshrine a specific “bad Christmas music” canon? I’ve noticed it’s all music from the mid 20th century. No historic tunes or anything more recent is blared non stop starting thanksgiving.
I was of course joking in that whole comment. Please don't threaten people with sticks. But I really don't think Jesus was referring here to what modern people mean when they say they are "young at heart". When people say that today, they at best mean that they like to forget their responsibilties and have fun with silly things at times, or at worst they mean that they like to go act like beasts at a nightclub on the weekeds even though they are in their 40's or 50's.Sorry, but Jesus disagrees.
Mt. 18
And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them, and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

What Christ was referring to here, if I understand correctly, is the ability to innocently follow God like a child follows his parents. You can absolutely be a grumpy old curmudgeon and still have that.
Romans 14:4 Who are you to judge the servant of another? To his own master he stands or falls; and he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand. 5 One person judges one day above another, another judges every day alike. Each person must be fully convinced in his own mind. 6He who regards the day, regards it for the Lord, and he who eats, eats for the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and he who does not eat, for the Lord he does not eat and gives thanks to God.
Someday we’ll have a real Halloween. It will be a night when young kids have to hide inside the house with the lights turned off as we, dressed as Tyrone or Jihadi Joe, ride around looking to egg anybody caught outside after dusk. We can call it Holohoax Remembrance Day.I don't like what Halloween has become. Starting as early as October 5th I started seeing adults dressed in Halloween costumes and a Halloween parade for children. October 5th. I know a guy (covered in tats with ear gauges) who proposed to his wife on Halloween because it's her favorite holiday. It's just weird. Not to mention all the demonic undertones and slutty costumes.
I remember as a kid Halloween being fun but as I grew up it became a holiday of cheating (over-age costuming to get candy that should be for kids), stealing (literally taking whole buckets of candy left out by home owners who didn't want to answer the door), and destruction of property (taking people's pumkins and smashing them, hitting mail boxes with cars, etc.). It's just a bad vibe night. Not to mention the October horror movie releases like Halloween and Friday The 13th which scarred me and millions of other children for life. I saw the movie Halloween by myself in a theater when I was 10 years-old and it completely f*cked me up. That sh*t should be illegal. I still look over my shoulder from time to time when I'm alone in the dark.
I definitely agree that horror movies are a very sinister thing that should not exist.I don't like what Halloween has become. I’m coming to bat for Halloween. It’s all fun and games. Imho the spooky images and demonic undertones are just a costume party. I talk about my Mediterranean heritage on this thread a lot but my mothers heritage is Scandinavian and descendent of an old Eastern European empire that doesn’t exist anymore. Demonic undertones? you should see how they dress for some village festivals in Hungary. It’s bad, some of those costumes are truly terrifying and I’d be traumatized if one of those things walked up to me as a kid. Now for us Orthodox, halloween is more cultural. It’s a Catholic holiday, but if I remember correctly wasn’t the point to be a holiday to be scarier than the demons and drive them away because it was originally a pagan holiday, and the day when the veil between this world and the next was the thinnest?I don't like what Halloween has become. People always told scary stories and had blood and guts and crazy tales of demons from times forgotten. Cinema is just another medium. That is sad it’s a bad vibes night. People having fun, feeding strangers, late night fellowship. What’s not Christian about that? IMHO Satans holiday is secular Christmas.I remember as a kid Halloween being fun but as I grew up it became a holiday of cheating (over-age costuming to get candy that should be for kids), stealing (literally taking whole buckets of candy left out by home owners who didn't want to answer the door), and destruction of property (taking people's pumkins and smashing them, hitting mail boxes with cars, etc.). Exactly St. Paul said it best in Romans 14. It’s in the manual. Some people have greater faith and eat and others have lesser and abstain. Let those eating and abstaining not quarrel. We read it before every lent. We can apply this to Halloween too, if your conscious doesn’t allow you, sit it out. It’s ok. The Holy Spirit is guiding you to for a reason. Here's what I believe about Halloween:
If you want to celebrate Halloween, knock yourself out. If you don't want to celebrate it, great. No one has the authority to bind my conscience to their persuasion, nor do I have the authority to bind their conscience to mine.

Silver Bells -- CHECK
White Christmas -- CHECK
it goes on and on
There's an Elder at my church who does not celebrate Christmas. He doesn't like the many pagan influences behind the holiday. It's not a problem. The only way we can go wrong is if we presume upon ourselves the authority to bind someone else's conscience in these areas of adiaphora. We still have a Christmas service, and we don't make it so much about the day, but rather take it as an occasion to celebrate the incarnation.Exactly St. Paul said it best in Romans 14. Do not quarrel with your brother who does not eat. I respect people who don’t celebrate Halloween or Christmas. But I like the holidays. I’d like to see Christmas become more liturgy focused and less secular tho. Even if the historical Jesus was born in July it’s the Feast of the Nativity. Halloweens just a spooky fall fest unless your Catholic. There's an Elder at my church who does not celebrate Christmas. He doesn't like the many pagan influences behind the holiday. My fight is with secular Christmas
Dude, don't even go there. Christmas is the bomb and I start celebrating it Nov. 1st by putting my Frank Sinatra Christmas CD into my car's CD player and putting it on repeat until January 1st. Yeah, that's right, two months of Christmas. Read em' and weep. The word even has the word "Christ" in it for cryin' out loud! "Halloween"... give me a break. That thing's got Satan written all over it (which is why it's so much "fun").IMHO Satans holiday is secular Christmas.
I listen to Christmas music all year round. Good hymns transcend their seasons.Dude, don't even go there. For all those working in centers of commerce and retail this season who must endure endless 50s and 60s Christmas music, let us pray to the lord…Dude, don't even go there. I bet Sinatra singing Christmas music makes you euphoric.I listen to Christmas music all year round. Good hymns transcend their seasons.
Listen to Frank Sinatra all year round too.
