“Border czar” Tom Homan, who oversees President Trump’s mass deportation program, shot back at Pope Francis after he chastised the administration’s approach to immigration enforcement.
“I’ve got harsh words for the Pope,” Homan told reporters at the White House on Tuesday. “Pope ought to fix the Catholic Church.”
“I’m saying this as a lifelong Catholic — I was baptized Catholic, my first Communion as a Catholic, confirmation as a Catholic. He ought to fix the Catholic Church and concentrate on his work and leave border enforcement to us,” he continued.
Homan noted the Vatican, where the pope resides, is walled in.
“He wants to attack us securing our border? He has a wall around the Vatican, does he not? So he has a wall to protect his people and himself, but we can’t have a wall around the United States,” Homan said.
“I wish he’d stick to the Catholic Church and fix that and leave border enforcement to us,” he added.
Homan’s remarks come in response to a letter the pope wrote Monday criticizing mass deportations from the U.S. and calling for the dignified treatment of migrants.
The pope, in his letter, recognized “the right of a nation to defend itself and keep communities safe from those who have committed violent or serious crimes while in the country or prior to arrival,” but he condemned the approach the Trump administration has taken.
“The act of deporting people who in many cases have left their own land for reasons of extreme poverty, insecurity, exploitation, persecution or serious deterioration of the environment, damages the dignity of many men and women, and of entire families, and places them in a state of particular vulnerability and defenselessness,” Francis wrote in the letter.
Treating people with dignity, the pope said, “does not impede the development of a policy that regulates orderly and legal migration.”
“However, this development cannot come about through the privilege of some and the sacrifice of others,” Francis continued. “What is built on the basis of force, and not on the truth about the equal dignity of every human being, begins badly and will end badly.”
The Trump administration has prioritized mass deportations, a long-standing promise from the campaign trail.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said last week that more than 8,000 people had been arrested in immigration enforcement actions since Trump took office on Jan. 20, The Associated Press reported. Some migrants have been deported, while others are being held in federal prisons or at the Guantánamo Bay detention center in Cuba.

Trump border czar knocks Pope Francis’s criticism: ‘Fix the Catholic Church’
On September 5, 2024, Pope Francis embarked on his Southeast Asian tour. Besides visiting various countries, he also celebrated Mass in each of them. Even though I was already a firm believer in Orthodoxy, I attended his Mass because it had been over 30 years since a Pope's last visit—Pope John Paul II in 1989. I was curious to see what would happen and what I would experience during his visit and Mass.
At first, I was excited since it was a kind of once-in-a-lifetime experience. It's not every day that a Pope celebrates Mass himself. I felt excitement from the start of the day until the arrival of Pope Francis at the stadium. But when the Mass started, the moment of truth arrived for me.
During the Mass, I did not feel anything at all. I don't mean feeling ecstatic or filled with the Holy Spirit like in an evangelical or charismatic worship service, but rather the feeling of "this is the right thing," like at an Orthodox church. When I attend the Divine Liturgy at an Orthodox church, I feel right at home; this is the right thing to do, and heaven and earth are combined into one.
I realized that the Divine Liturgy served by someone who is only a priest is worth much more than a Mass served by the head of the Roman Catholic Church himself. This made me realize that the Orthodox Church is The Church, and Orthodoxy is Christianity.
Here are some photos that I took during Pope Francis's Mass. The resolution is poor since I took them with a cellphone without optical zoom. Even then, for uploading to this forum, the photos are resized and compressed even more.

You're the guy who thinks cars, abs and women are the pinnacle of existence leading to becoming an "alpha" male right?
Not the biggest fan of the current pope myself but yea I don't think you're the one who should judging anyone's faith. Having vanity in regards to your faith is not the best look....
He's just confessing his faith. No need to shame him for it.
I made this post as a follow-up to the post I made two weeks ago in the Ortho Lounge thread. I promised to provide proof of attending Pope Francis's mass to show that I'm not making things up. However, I decided to post here because I wanted to criticize the experience. A pope leading the mass does not affect me as much as an Orthodox liturgy, where I feel heaven and earth become one. He's just confessing his faith. No need to shame him for it.
I experienced an altered state right off the bat the first time I stepped foot in an Orthodox church and attended my first-ever Divine Liturgy. Right after that, I stopped looking at other churches and knew that my search was over.
I have attended Catholic Mass and Catholic Charismatic Renewal several times, but I did not experience anything different. Last year, I even attended Pope Francis's Mass, but I did not feel anything different. This made me realize that Orthodoxy is the truth because when the priest celebrates a Divine Liturgy, I experience something positive that is hard to describe. But when a leader of the Catholic Church celebrates Mass, I do not feel anything.
(P.S. In the future, I have to make a follow-up post regarding attending Pope Francis's Mass as proof that I'm not lying or making things up.)
So Catholics pig out before the sun comes up, skip lunch, then pig out when they get home from work and call it a fast?
I was having a dig at the Muslim 'fast' in relation to the video of the Catholic priest, not having a dig at Catholics. I used to think Ramadan was really impressive until I found out that it's basically skipping lunch and getting a bit thirsty. Maybe I'm a bit cranky because I'm fasting and am on my second day of just water. Man, am I looking forward to breakfast...For "ba'utha" or supplication as translated from Aramaic to English on the 5th week of the epiphany we fast until noon and don't eat any meat products for the 3 days Jonah spent in the whale.
For "solma" or lent we don't eat meat products for 40 days in solidarity with the time Jesus spent in desert.
Some don't eat meat on Fridays year round, that's actually common among Chaldeans.
I think you guys have for some reason tried to convince yourselves that the Americanized Disney fake news version of Catholicism is real beyond some people with a agenda who are Christian in name only, I don't know why that is it's not something I would expect from this group. You should come to my Church, it would change that perception.
