70s thread - The best of the 1970s

So often you see it refered to as Gerry Rafferty's haunting Baker Street - and with good reason! I feel a chill everytim it builds toward that initial sax solo, but the real chill comes from the lyrics - I listen and think "I know that guy ... hell, I AM that guy". Who has not felt "another year and then then you'll be happy ... just one more year and then you'll be happy ..."

Regarding the sax solo, the saxophonist was a session guy who claimed he improvised the sax solo and take credit for Rafferty's brilliance. It was a point of controversy until a demo was found that predated the recording in which the solo was played out on guitar. Eventually, Rafferty (brilliantly) determined it would be even more moving as a sax solo but lousy thing for the saxophonist to try to claim it as his work.

Similar to Rafferty's Baker Street, give a listen to Danny O'Keefe's "Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues" - try listening to this song and not feeling wistful.

This may be 1969, but... close enough :

Whoa, it came out of the sky
Landed just a little south of Moline

Jody fell out of his tractor
Couldn't b'lieve what he seen, oh

Laid on the ground shook
Fearin' for his life
Then he ran all the way to town
Screamin', "It came out of the sky"

Well, a crowd gathered 'round
And a scientist said it was marsh gas
Spiro came to make a speech
About raisin' the Mars tax

Vatican said, "Woe, the Lord has come"
Hollywood rushed out an epic film
Ronnie the Populist said
It was a communist plot
Whoa-oh

Oh, the newspapers came
And made Jody a national hero
Walter and Eric said they'd put him
On a network TV show

White House said, "Put the thing in the Blue Room"
The Vatican said, "No, it belongs in Rome"
Jody said, "It's mine
But you can have it for 17 million"

Whoa, it came out of the sky
Landed just a little south of Moline

Jody fell out of his tractor
Couldn't b'lieve what he seen, oh

Laid on the ground a-shakin'
Fearin' for his life
And then he ran all the way to town
Screamin', "It came out of the sky"

Whoa
