Last night's boxing match between Tyson Fury & Francis Ngannou is a good event to start, Tyson being a World Champion boxer and Francis a former MMA World Champion for the UFC.

I watched the highlights and Fury was struggling. Tyson Fury had his long deserved humbling by being knocked down and we'll marked up by a man who had never had a professional boxing bout before. And respected pundits were saying that Ngannou won the fight by a couple of rounds on their cards.

Since the last of his trilogy of fights with Wilder, he's been boastful, belittling and dismissive of other boxers, tediously capricious and contradictory, ungracious and ungrateful. He professes to be a Christian, but his behaviour doesn't reflect a man who is God.

Tyson Fury is a very talented boxer, but his arrogance meant he was ill prepared for a hungry determined opponent. I also believe that God inhibited him last night and allowed the Francis to humble him. Pride comes before a fall. I hope it hits him hard, really hard and he reflects on his bad behaviour over the past couple of years. He needs to take a leaf out of his supposed next opponent's book and get himself right with the Lord. Uzyk will run rings around him if they meet and he hasn't learnt from this. I know people who have met him and said he's a friendly enough bloke. That said, Uzyk is a practicing Orthodox Christian who displays Christian virtues and if they meet I'd be happy if Uzyk wins.

Yeah, that was an embarrassing performance, and he made all of boxing look bad. For a self-proclaimed follower of Jesus, Fury sure isn't living up to biblical principles. He should be ashamed of himself.

Couldn't agree more with you. There was a thread about Fury on the old forum and I believe I mentioned I had some tenuous connections with him when I was younger. As in, I've been in the same room as him on more than one occasion, but not for well over a decade.

Last night was an Icarus moment, he's been flying too close to the sun and he almost fell flat on his face as a result. It was great seeing him battle against the establishment in the mid 2010s with his personal views etc, but in recent years he's been - for lack of a better term - a bit of a dick.

Hopefully he learns his lesson and can become undisputed. I really like Usyk, but having championed Fury to be the top heavy of his era since the beginning of his career, I'd still like to see him to it.

As an aside, Ngannou was very impressive. Him v Wilder would be like two characters from StreetFighter or something. Not much skill set but 99/100 for power.

What?

Different take.

He got hit with a lucky shot and Nganu is an incredible power puncher.

When someone weights 270 lbs, it only takes 1 good shot.

Fury did soundly out his Nganu in the end... But Nganu had much much more skill than I expected.

Fury also decided not to wind up and throw haymakers, because he's saving stuff for Usyk in December.

Of course he was coached by Mike Tyson for several months... So that's going to matter.

Has anyone here recently read Andrew Anglin's Illness Revelations? The second part was about "alcoholism", and how people who view it as an illness usually make it impossible for themselves to moderate their flaws and destructive behavior. Instantly made me think about Fury.
After having seen a lot of them online, I have come to realize that John Fury is a terrible force in his family and psychologically terrorizing them. It's usually a bad sign when the fathers are involved like that in their children's public persona.
Boxing, mouthing off and drinking are all ways by which Tyson avoids confronting his narcissistic dad. God's giving him a chance to re-evaluate his life choices while he is still young, as opposed to looking at suicide when he retires because of his age or passing the trauma on to his children by living through their career.

When a WBC belt holder, from a proud fighting family, gets put on his back side, cut and bruised up by a novice, he does not have a single thought in his head other than, "right, I'm going to teach this upstart a lesson".

He's not a novice though.

He's a world champion combat sports athlete who had a background in Boxing.

Usyk would have gotten rocked also.

Nganu's fight IQ is quite high actually.

Look at that punch again, it was a glancing blow. Then look at the hammers Wilder was landing, rippling through Fury's fat layers. No, he was either not in shape mentally, or his Wilder fights have left him prone.

Fury talked about a rematch, so his boxer's pride is hurt. This is what I think will happen: the Uzyk fight in December, no chance that goes ahead now. Frank Warren will try to wrangle a rematch with Ngannou early new year. If Fury doesn't implode in the meantime, but takes the rematch seriously, then Ngannou will get schooled. Anyway, we'll see.

I dont know. A glancing blow from a 270lb man who's got the hardest punches in combat sports could rock anyone.

I'm 245 and I wouldn't want to fight a dude my size who can punch.

I do agree it was not his best performance...but I think he kept some in the tank before 5h3 Usyk fight.

I suspect he will crush Usyk who, while technically is very gifted, won't be a match for the size like Nganu was. Nganu couldn't be leaned on like all the other boxers.

Nganu also switched stances, disputed timing, and threw some big bombs.

Vs Wilder, Tyson landed some really really big punches with the left hook/right hook trap. Nganu really disrupted that with his high right hand guard.

Whatever the case, it's stupid to underestimate Nganu....

Fury interview... He points out that it wasn't his best performance.... But admits Nganu gave him a better fight than most have done in years.

Discusses the grazing shot, says "he got greedy" and owns it...

Yeah I had Ngannou winning 3 rounds out of 10. Everyone is freaking out about it and crying robbery because he surpassed expectations and caught Fury with a solid hook, but that's not how scoring works. It's round by round and Fury won 7 of them IMO.

Fury did look bad, slow and hesitant. Like he didn't take the fight seriously. He also didn't do his usual "I want to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ" bit in his post fight speech, that he always does after a win. Maybe because they were in Saudi Arabia. Either way I'm disappointed that he didn't say it.

He'll have his work cut out for him in his next match vs Usyk, maybe he'll prepare better this time around. Also, I think that's the best Ngannou is ever going to look against a top ten pro boxer. He got lucky going up against an ill-prepared opponent who was underestimating him. Now everyone will take him very seriously, and have plenty of tape to work off of, and will prepare accordingly.

Agreed. Fury easily won on the cards. Boxing is a sport and it's scored a certain way.

And for those who are upset about Fury being prideful, Ngannou was a real prima donna in the UFC after all they did to initially promote him. He barely practiced for the first Stipe fight and got soundly washed.

To succeed at this level all these guys have irrational egos off the charts.

It's hard to explain, but this video inspired (soft) me to finally take kickboxing lessons a few years ago.

To your point (@Get2choppaaa) in the posts above:

We paired up with guys our similar size. I was around 200lbs, 6 ft, at the time. They put me with some very friendly pipefitter dude. We had huge gloves, shin pads, were told what was coming and what we would drill.

Even when you know there is a kick, and you are braced to block it, and the guy is going at 80% or so...

A man over 200lbs kicking you will shake your very soul. It rattles your body such that your ancestors feel it.

Very soon, not a single thread relating to the culture will be untouched by the JQ.
