I have been to Sardinia a few times, and even in remote corners of it. I would stay away from Cagliari (which nouveau-riches Russians have bought huge swaths of anyhow), and stick to the smaller less touristy locations. You don't have to travel far inland to be REALLY in the wilderness in Sardinia. It may be a part of Italy, but it feels like another country completely. I have seen the occasional African male sitting around in places such as Carloforte, and they just look forlorn and lost, honestly. They'd probably be happy to be hired on as a manual laborer to help you build your dream home. My experience in Sicily has been different: there you will see more North Africans, Muslims, Arabs, but again, if you get out of the main cities, you'll be fine. Sicily is also a stunning place. Unfortunately, you probably won't find work in Italy...because there isn't much to be had. Best option is to work remotely, or be willing to teach English, which unfortunately doesn't pay much.
