The Trump tariffs

But if the future is automated factories, then tariffs 100% make sense; from the leadership's position, you absolutely want those automated factories to be built in home territory to make yourself self-sufficient, and be able to sell it to others abroad.

Seriously, why do we need foreigners if we have robots? Don't need immigration either. And the jobs created to service the robot factories will be done here, in America, and the excess wealth produced by robots will be taxed here as well.

Tariffs make the most sense no matter how you slice it, but I think they make even more sense if robots are indeed the future. Robotic factories sound like a hen laying golden eggs; why wouldn't you want it??
Elon Musk and others need to sit down and forget about Mars for awhile and come up with technology to automate manufacturing in the USA and make sure China doesnt steal the robot technology to replicate back home, USA needs to have a bit more secrecy about their inventions and innovations, just do it quietly.

I agree with what you are saying. I am just saying that the additional manufacturing jobs won't offset the job losses occurring in the wider economy due to advances in robotics and automation. Journalists, accountants, statisticians, data entry clerks, etc are being replaced by AI as we speak. The government will eventually have to rejig the tax and welfare systems to redistribute additional income to prevent civil unrest.
Americans already arent doing some of these jobs, the Chinese are so does it really matter? Im talking about the repetitive factory jobs, you would still need technicians and programers to run and service the robots and to build new ones so that lone will grow, it would also reduce illegal immigration a bit, the only concern is WHO WOULD OWN these companies and what would they do with all the profits?

Haters will say Trump has cucked by granting a 90 day pause on the new tariffs he imposed worldwide just a week ago.
Fanboys will say it was Trump's plan all along to force other countries to negotiate new deals with the USA.
I must be a fanboy. My understanding is that it's not really about tariffs, it's about trade deficits. There are a lot of non-tariff barriers to trade, and the real goal is to remove whatever restrictions are necessary to make the US trade deficit with that country go to zero or positive.

So, if countries call up ready and willing to do whatever it takes to reach this goal, they should receive cooperation and waivers and such. If I turns out there slow rolling negotiations, then the punitive tariffs should be turned back on.

I don't think this needs to happen. Per the Elon Musk biography by Walter Isaacson, Elon already tried to make the Tesla factories 100% automated in the beginning but learned it wasn't doable. He figured out people are better are certain tasks and a mix of human and robot is preferred. I think there was more about that in the biography, but my memory fails to come up with more.

We knew this since the 80s when GM saw robots being used in Japanese Toyota plants and decided, "Hey, let's make everything robot!" and then opened Detroit-Hamtramck as a 100% 'dark' factory with all automation where the robots started smashing car windshields, painting each other, and trying to mount bumpers for Rivieras on Sevilles because they couldn't tell the difference.

The answer is robot to ASSIST, not to do everything.
