A month ago, I rewatched American Me. A work of genius. It's about the Mexican mafia. A few people died because of it, so you know that Edward James Olmos touched a nerve. I recommend it.
It’s funny you mention that. Edward James Olmos had his life threatened over this film. They showed a lot of graphic male prison, rape, and that didn’t go over so well with the gangs.
It doesn’t shock me that there was fallout and other people getting killed over the film because yes, the male prison rape touched a few nerves with the Mexican gangs

I watched it on video in the early 90's when I was in junior high...yeah, it was pretty graphic...
There's another film about the same story called Blood In, Blood Out (1993). It's interesting to see another POV on this.
I thought it looked terrible.
I think I've seen 1 or 2 superhero films that have been released in the last decade.
I'm ready for this fad to be over. It's all slop.
Superman works great for animated stuff, like the old 90s animated series and some of the DC cartoon movies from the past decade. That stuff seems to hit. Live action is incredibly outdated at this point. Marve did it to death, no one is impressed by a good portrayal of their hero brought to life anymore. We're over it.
I watched it when it came out and I thought it was good but definitely not for everyone as the atmosphere was extremely dark. I don't remember it that well so maybe ripe for a rewatch.
The Fleischer Superman was fantastic, the animation was anyway. Fleischer Studios were a rival to Disney at the time. When things become too popular, the normies ruin it because the creators water it down to appeal to everybody. The art becomes safe, predictable, meaningless. In this case, the Disneyfied goofy neckbeards that ruined Marvel have also ruined DC.
There is no reason that this character should not have at least one great live action film. I felt that Zack Snyder came the closest to achieving that but that film was still largely mediocre. This new Superman makes Man of Steel look like a masterpiece in comparison.
Which ones?
I thought the newest Batman was excellent. Great writing, great cinematography, great action. No complaints. The follow up Penguin show was probably the best mini series I've ever seen, it was even better than the movie. I'm only in it for the Matt Reeves Batman at this point. I was hoping that some of that greatness would flow over into Superman but I was greatly mistaken. That DC would give James Gunn the keys to the castle is terrifying.

I have mixed feelings about this film. It is clear when you watch it that Zack Snyder wanted to tell a deeper story than what was actually made. The themes behind it are very interesting, but the characters themselves got butchered in the process, because they were too stringently made to suit various archetypes rather than the characters that the fans know and love. I'm not going to tell you it's a secret work of genius. It's polarizing, but I think I happened to be on it's good side.
Think about this. Lex Luthor is a reddit-tier atheist who hates Superman because he recognizes that Superman is a Christ figure. Batman is a Paul figure who initially opposes Superman but comes around to be on his side. I think if you see it from that lens, the film is more forgivable.
If this new Superman has proved anything to me, it's that modern audiences do not want their brain to be turned on when watching a superhero movie (or seemingly any movie). Just the opposite. They want their brains to be turned off and escape into fantasy land for 3+ hours. I don't approach fiction the same way. I dont have an escapist mindset. What interests me about fiction is why someone would put something in there in the first place, or in other words, what is the real world referent?
Hollywood's mission is to induce this kind of mental state in its audience so that they are receptive to messaging without any critical analysis during or after.
I actually did like the new Batman movie, though it felt unnecessary. And yeah, thge Penguinn show was great too.
I like the first Avengers too. But other than those I can't really think of a single comic book movie in the last 10 or so years that I liked.
Another Superman review…. forgettable and average. Ok to watch on streaming on a rainy day. Jimmy Olson was the best character in the movie. That should tell you something. OG Christopher Reeve is still easily the best. I always enjoyed Superman 2…great villains in that one.
Finally got around to watching Sully. I wanted to see this when it came out in 2016. Great film. Made me feel thankful to be alive and that life is a gift. I did not expect it to be a courtroom drama, which was just icing on the cake for me. I love Eastwood's films because they have soul. This reminded me of Richard Jewell, which I also recommend.
Sully was good, I think the courtroom drama was majorly embellished and made up for cheap movie drama. Did you see Hank's film about the Somali pirates hijacking the cargo ship? If not, highly recommend for a similar feeling.
+1 for recent Eastwood films, like Richard Jewell and The Mule. Nothing fancy, straightforward story telling that goes from A to B, but easy to watch and enjoyable.
I'll check it out. I absolutely love A24 films, even if they are sometimes a bit leftist like other Hollywood films. However, they are always intelligent and often very bold in their filmmaking.
