Exactly. The government does not have the authority to redefine what God has already defined. This is why "gay marriage" is more properly called gay mirage, because it's an illusion, God doesn't recognize it. Anyone who does recognize it makes himself an enemy of God.

Further, marriage is cross cultural. Humanity figured out ages ago that a husband and wife in monogamy produced the most stable society and it actually produces children. Two queens can decide to get 'married' but they can't force society to recognize it as such. Courts can't force states to recognize same sex unions. Neither can congress for that matter. All of that is left up to the state legislatures.
