I played basketball growing up, and the game has changed tremendously over the last 15 years. It is almost like a whole new game, and it gives a chance for White guys to compete at the top level. It's interesting to see how basketball has developed in a completely different direction. The game is way more cerebral now. Players are playing well into their 30s, despite declining athleticism. As a result, white players like Jokic, Doncic etc. are dominating the game, although they lack raw athleticism and are slightly overweight. The next big American prospect is white too.
Anyway, focus more on minorities on national teams, this development represents a larger issue of starkly rising numbers of immigrant children. The indignation comes from people being reminded of how bad things are in their cities when they see their teams on the big screen.
It's the same way very few in the west had issues with the LGTVQB movement until it was getting shoved in your throat 24/7.
The two big changes in that time are...
1) The Eurostep. The extra step going to the basket allows for guys who are maybe not as quick, but very fluid/balanced/ think quickly to make great plays.
2) The focus on the three-point shot. The entire game is revolved around the three-point shot, whereas it used to be all about getting the ball into the post. You don't have to be a super athlete to shoot three pointers. You just have to put in a lot of work.
