Some updates & changes to the site

Were there any recent updates on the religion shown on our posts? I definitely never would have set mine to Agnostic, and I can't seem to locate where to change that?

Was a default status given for those who haven't logged in for a while or something?

Which religion would you like? All moderators can update tags now. Looks like you just got lost in the system with the update.

Maybe it's a different setting for videos?
Don't know, but I couldn't upload a 1,3MB gif earlier and started to check where the limit is, and a 499KB gif is fine, but a 555KB is a no go.
Think that during the last update some settings could have gone back to default...

Re: CIK data management

The limit is currently 512kb per attachment. Admin have advised that the limit has been reduced to save server space, because increasing data storage requirements entail higher costs in money and time.

@Servant of Christ

Some options for consideration:

1. Increase the upload limit from 512kb to 1.5MB or 2MB. This should be large enough to allow for decent quality images to be uploaded, while not overloading the server.

Most MP4s/videos will not be uploadable and instead will need to be manually resized or hosted elsewhere. High quality videos use a huge amount of space so this is unavoidable.

Most of my meme creations are under 2MB, however photos saved by members are likely to be over 2MB, leading to point #2:

2. Install an auto-reduction tool that reduces the size of all large uploads and removes all meta-data. This means members would not have to manually resize their own images. I strongly recommend this option over simply setting a limit, because forcing CIK members to manually resize their uploads is likely to significantly reduce engagement.

There are inbuilt and third-party add-ons for this purpose:

In-built:
https://xenforo.com/community/threads/automatically-resize-images.149232/#post-1262625

Third-party:

Removing meta-data:

3. Recommend members post content from other sites. Rather than searching for an image or finding it online, saving it, and uploading it; instead, press/right click on the image to copy the image URL and then paste via the function: image -> insert link.

4. Recommend links to few image/video upload sites which are (a) free and (b) easy to use. This will enable members to store files, especially larger videos, on external sites to be embedded in posts, instead of uploading to the CIK server.

5. Advise members if/when data management becomes burdensome. At that stage, members can be advised on more precise costings. Then we can decide on next steps e.g., changing data management, or paying more to increase data storage.

6. Give greater posting privileges on file sizes (e.g. 4MB) to members who have donated. This may contribute to the overall philanthropy drive.

Re: Announcement on this

Whatever the decisions, IMO this is best made as a 'special bulletin' and pinned to the front landing page on a temporary basis to maximise visibility to members, as limiting uploads may cause confusion and decrease forum engagement.

More broadly, I would recommend -- where feasible given limits on time and energy -- that Admin make quick updates in this thread or in a highly visible location advising on any other planned changes that may impact members' user experience.

As always, thank you to our Admin and mods for all their volunteer work behind the scenes.

Thank You So Much GIF by Mauro Gatti

I will write a more in-depth response tomorrow but I wanted to acknowledge your concerns and feedback. We will work together to find a reasonable accomodation regarding data limits, and I will fully address all concerns and questions.

Regarding the drama comment, I was responding to someone who literally accused the women of a conspiracy to troll the site and cause problems, with zero evidence. And in fairness I did acknowledge his concerns, and explained why I don't think it is going to be an issue.

As I explained before, I understand why some people are hesitant. I also tried to explain why I think CiK is different, and why I think we can hope for a different and better outcome. And as I've said it's only an experiment at this point, but in fairness to the women, I haven't seen them causing any trouble, so let's try to give them a fair shot.

As always I appreciate everyone's feedback and unique points of view. It is one of the things that sets CiK apart and makes it special.

Regarding any anomolous religious affiliations, it was not intentional and I apologize if that upset or confused anyone. As I went through and cleaned up the database recently I found a few users who had no badge and/or religion defined so in some cases I had to set it to something and in some cases I may have set you to Agnostic with the intent to address it later on.

We will absolutely get that cleared up for you upon request and now the mods have the ability to change this directly whereas before they had to ask me for help, so the process will be quicker and more efficient. I humbly ask for your forgiveness and thank you for your patience as we work through some of these growing pains.

What you all have done here is really great and I just needed to voice my concerns of losing something critical - appreciate you taking it into consideration. I really didn't have much ground to stand on, being that I've been not been active in a while...but there really is a ton of potential here. I sincerely appreciate all you and others have done and I hope I can contribute. Also no offense at all in the affiliation tag, I just couldn't find where that setting was and just assumed I was overlooking it 😅

I am currently unable to post in the Christian Memes thread, or even make reactions, but someone else was able to post there just now. Now that I have a reply window open, I see all my tags are gone. I see Shaquilleoatmeal's tags are gone too, but analysis_green and president still have theirs.

Edit: after I clicked to post this reply, my tags are back, but Shaquilleoatmeal's tags are still gone. I still can't post in the Christian Memes thread, which is in Christian general.

From my POV the limit needs to be at least 2MB. Not for the fun stuff (memes are generally smaller, and we've got the GIF library built in), but for large, detailed images like maps - something like 2,5-3MB should be enough.

Note: I just rebuilt the forum and user caches, in case that might help.

I am no longer able to post in the Orthodox or general Christian forums. Haven't changed anything, so I think something went wrong with the update?
According to the permissions analyzer you are able to post, reply, etc in the Orthodox Christianity and Christian General forums. Please consider re-opening your browser, clearing cookies, etc. Let me know if you still have problems after that and I can take another look.

I can’t post in this.
The Other Religions forum is meant for religions other than the main ones - people with the 'Other' badge.

That sounds great, but it adds up fast. And the data doesn't age out - it becomes permanent. Every time I backup the site it's bigger and bigger and bigger. That means it takes longer to backup, uses more bandwidth, and consumes more disk space - both on the server and the backup drive.

It's like the US national debt, it may be working now but in the long term it isn't really sustainable (or at least, it's going to become very costly and then eventually something will have to give). So what is the long term solution? Are people going to continue donating ever larger sums of money to keep the site going in order to support all the extra things that are being uploaded?

My posiiton is that we must rely more on cloud hosting for these resources, and embed them in the posts. At the very least, I think uploading files to the CiK server should be a last resort only if they can't be hosted somewhere else and embedded, and only if there is a good reason. Not for silly throwaway content (not saying it is always that, but there is a lot of that kind of stuff).

I think in most cases when a file gets uploaded, a few people get a moment of amusement, and it is soon forgotten for the next thing. However that file stays on the server forever, taking up space.

Perhaps this should have its own thread and a poll or something. It's not a trivial issue and I'm trying to make people aware and plan for the long term viability of the site. Because having a place to come together in Christ is so much more important than uploading some memes, though there is certainly room for both. We have limited resources so we need to use them wisely.

Anyway, I'm sorry to be a downer about this, but I hope everyone understands and we can work together to find an acceptable compromise. :)

Is it? Used to be available to anyone - check who made posts there.

Had a similar issue and it looks resolved, without doing anything on my part.

That's somewhat problematic...
Edit.
While I still think that the limit should be higher than 0,5MB (old RVF had 1MB, CiK initially had 1,3), I can make do with the current limit by converting larger images/gifs to WebP.
Testing WebP gif upload:
abandon ship.webp
Original GIF was 1,7MB, after WebP conversion it's 0,3
