It's sad to see them get old, but most of them still looked in reasonable health. Dogs learn a lot over the years. With an old dog, you can just speak to it in sentences, and it will do what you're saying. Obviously they don't understand full sentences, but they know a lot of words, and the know from experience and reading your gestures what you want, so it often seems like they do understand what you're saying.

Perhaps I'm being a bit of a sap, maybe it's because my boy is getting old himself, but when I see those dogs I see their aging as a reflection of the love and happiness they have brought their owners over the years.
