That is terrible! Dimes are too low value to be used any more, along with pennies and nickles.

They had to pick up the dimes, because millions of dimes do add up to hundreds of $1000s, but an individual can only pick them up at a fairly low rate per hour. It must have been unbelievably tedious work to clean this up!

A single small hat representative would have collected the entire hoard by hand in under 30 minutes.

That reminded me of something that went on in a city I used to live in. There was a place called "the bins" where Goodwill sent all of its stuff that was going to be trashed, and people had a chance to buy things for pennies per pound of stuff. It was a reseller's goldmine, which my father was into at the time. Anyway, one time I went in there and noticed a line of immigrant women standing by the wall doing nothing. They did nothing the entire time I was there. I mentioned it to my dad, and he said they wait until new bins come out every few hours, and all they do is comb through every purse they find and look for coins and cash that's been left behind. It must have been just lucrative enough where a whole team of them were there every day just to mine for loose change.

There are "silver miners" at casinos, they go around looking for machines where people left money in because they didn't have enough for the next spin and didn't cash it out.
