Yup. Anna was one of the organizers of the rioters during the 2016 HK Protests. The only places I have seen something like this is on produce stands outside of farms in remote rural areas, and in the church basement of a monastery for handcrafted goods (candles, soaps, jam etc).

I think the outlandish and rampant stealing and street theft that I saw for over 10 years in the mainland is a well known feature of communism that became normal in the USSR and its Eastern European satellites, and is not peculiar to China, but I'm heavily biased in favor of traditional Chinese culture and I've read few accounts of this period that might be revealing.
When I was in China, it was standard anarcho-tyranny where thieves' gangs were either protected or too dangerous for people to resist and no one was inclined or willing to aid their fellow bus passenger if they saw him being pickpocketed. I've heard this was normal in all the commie countries regardless of the ethnicities.
I do not consider petty theft to be Chinese the way I would sub-Saharan African, but business cheating, IP theft and white collar types of crimes I do consider to some extent common for Chinese, and this is a well-known stereotype grounded in truth, perhaps even moreso for its pre-Communist diaspora than its Mao-era, poverty stricken mainlanders, for whom stealing was not really an option since everyone's cupboards were bare.

In China, they have positive social engineering, no mass immigration and leaders that actually don't hate their people. That is why they can have unsupervised fridges out on the streets, unsupervised package dropoff centers, unmanned grocery stores and so forth and we can't.
You can still find this in many rural areas in both the US and Canada. There are plenty of honesty stores and places with no staff, just pick up your box of produce, jar of milk or whatever and square up at the end of the month. It's definitely not my grandfather's down-home country town anymore but many folks still leave the keys in the ignition and never lock their house doors. I've also seen this in several spots overseas, esp in SE Asia so it's not some binary here or there, but more of a matter of how much trust is in that particular local area.
I agree, many cities are bad in the US, but sometimes it sounds like the doom and gloom crew on here is saying everything, everywhere in the West is totally screwed and there's no hope anywhere. This is simply untrue, and I would suggest taking a road trip all across America a couple hundred miles inside the borders and then get a few miles off the main interstate every time you stop. What you will find is there's plenty of salt of the earth folks living 20-40 years in the past.

This kind of thing happens all the time in China and guys who became conversational in Mandarin and/or Cantonese sometimes ended up in fights because they could understand what was being said about them, and worse they knew how to speak back.
I felt like I knew a class of Chinese who never did this, but it sometimes surprised me when a Chinese I thought wouldn't but did.
Give it 10 years, or less, and it will be gone from the rural areas as well. I have family in the rural part of the USA, I grew up there, and the changes over the last 10 years are astonishing.
