India - Culture, Politics and Insanity

Indian fertility has supposedly dropped below replacement. Not so long ago large areas of India still had 6 children per woman. I've been seeing posts that Africa is finally seeing drops in their remaining high fertility areas. World population should start to level off. I wonder how long it will take to get back to the population we had in 2000?

Of course this raises the other topic I've been seeing everywhere. People are claiming that population numbers are much higher than reality. I can absolutely believe the US population has gone from 200 million to 330 million in my lifetime, because I have seen cities and towns grow tremendously. However, people are claiming the numbers are made up in other parts of the world.

Population size is not something that can easily be fudged beyond a reasonable range. You can get decent estimates just from data like the consumption of rice, electricity, number of cellphones, train passengers and many other data points.
