Donald Trump and US expansionism in North America

China halts the sale.
Hong Kong conglomerate CK Hutchison, led by tycoon Li Ka-shing, will not sign a deal next week to sell its two strategic ports at the Panama Canal to a BlackRock-led group, the South China Morning Post reported on Friday.
The deal was expected to be signed on April 2, according to the sale announcement made on March 4. It is understood the situation does not mean the deal has been called off, the South China Morning Post added, citing the source.

Pro-Beijing Hong Kong newspaper Ta Kung Pao said in an editorial piece on March 21 that the transaction should to be scrapped as the deal is a “perfect cooperation” with the U.S. strategy to contain China.

Greenlanders got a pretty good deal from Danish rule, I'd say. Good living standards, Christianity (albeit Lutheranism), European education, and a high degree of autonomy. You look at a place like Gaza and thank God it was some Danes and Norwegians who landed on your shores centuries ago.

Christianity helped every land it spread to, the belief and gospel of God and Jesus are beautiful enriching things. Islam and Judaism just trashed whatever they came across including my ancestors lands.

Inuit Greenlander society is comparable to that of their cousins in Canada, aka high suicide rates, high sexual abuse rates, high alcoholism and drug abuse rates and high unemployment rates. Like in Canada the dysfunction gets subsidized by the State.

Link below is about a case study in Tasiilaq that revealed that about half of the people under 60 were sexually abused as a child, often by their immediate family. Also close to 1/10 of the Greenlanders (which includes Danes who bring the statistics down) end their life by suicide. That means that in every school class (~30 kids) on average 3 alumni will eventually hang or shoot themselves.

Denmark is a longtime NATO member state. They helped occupy ("peace-keep") Kosovo and have basically gone along with most American military misadventures (e.g., actively supporting the invasion and occupation of Iraq). Now they are listening to Americans like JD Vance talk about how Denmark cannot protect Greenland and that the United States is needed to keep the peace. I bet many Serbs are grimacing.

Pete Hegseth was in Panama yesterday, progress on increasing cooperation with the Panamese. The US and Panama signed a deal on free and prioritized passage for US warships and auxiliary vessels in the canal.

Additionally there are rumours of a joint Mulina-Hegseth Declaration, so far there hasn't been a US equivalent of the Spanish version below meaning it's likely fake. Points mentioned. 1. Panama leaves the Silk Road/BRI, 2.Panama and US resume military exercises and 3. Panama will help rollback communist advances in the region.

In addition Hegseth mentioned US' intention to reopen US military facilities in Panama like the jungle school

Danish ambassador to the US isn't happy about the new wave of memes
Just a friendly reminder about the US and the Kingdom of Denmark: We are close allies and should continue to work together as such. US security is also Greenland’s and Denmark’s security. Greenland is already part of NATO. The Kingdom of Denmark and the United States work together to ensure security in the Arctic. The Kingdom of Denmark has significantly boosted its Arctic security efforts - in 2025 alone, we committed USD 13,7 bn that can be used in the Arctic and North Atlantic. Because we take our joint security seriously.
And yes, we expect full respect for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark.

The theory I've seen going around is that the US will pay $1,000,000 to every man, woman, and child in Greenland if they agree to join the US. That's about $50 billion, which would be a decent price given the strategic value, not to mention the potential economic value from mining.

I suppose the threat of military force as an alternate solution provides a nice carrot and stick setup.

The crazy part is that this would work, let them vote who the hell would vote against it other than maybe the less than 1% who don't want the money or have an underlying agenda. A million isn't a crazy amount of money anymore but I wonder what that does to have every member of a population all of a sudden become a millionaire, that would be interesting and come with some issues I'm sure....

You could pay the million dollars to each person in 10 or 20 or 30 year installments, depending on a person's age.

That's smart, that would alleviate a lot of issues and you would get some really patriotic citizens overnight 🤣. I would do it over a long period regardless of age, alleviates it even more. Tell them you're getting a little under 3k a month for 30 years, decent percentage of the population doesn't see it out and the 3k is worth less and less as time goes by. Haha it will never happen but it would work!
