The Venezuela Thread

The funny thing is invading Guyana from Venezuela is like trying to march through the Mississippi delta. Not so much a thing.

Also Chevron (through acquiring Hess) and Exxon have major interests in those oilfields. Methinks as stated... There's nothing going to happen significantly to alter corporate deals already in the works.

I just want to focus on this part "The only roads that lead from Venezuela to Esequibo are through Brazil".

So if Venezeula wants to invade they would need permission from Brazil to pass through Brazilian territory. That does not seem that likely to me. And Venezuela would not dare start a war Brazil because they would get their ass handed to them.

The Biden administration is set to potentially renew sanctions on Venezuelan oil in April after the banning of an opposition candidate for this year’s presidential elections, Bloomberg reports. The six-month suspension of sanctions on Venezuelan oil ends in April, and the Biden administration may renew all sanctions at that time due to failure to meet the conditions for their lifting.
Last week, opposition leader Maria Corina Machado was blocked from running for president by a court ruling in a move she has referred to as “judicial criminality” orchestrated by Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro.

If anything Venezuela's geopolitical position on Iran and Russia would be a much bigger giveaway, the Maduro Clique was one of by the few staunch supporters of Tehran during the Twelve Day War - a position that for some reason didn't reach the mainstream. Venezuela under Maduro is also opening up to Russian arms manufacturing and is being named as a potential host for a Russian missile basis a la Cuba 1963 even though the advent of ICBMs relinquishes much of any future missile base's relevance. The news below is not confirmed and was mentioned in response to Trump putting two nuclear submarines on standby. There are however quite a few Russian military bloggers close to the Kremlin who spoke on the matter, and who relayed that the possibility was indeed proposed in National Security Council meetings as a retaliatory measure.

The US is sending an additional 3 Aegis guided missile destroyers to the Venezuelan shores. This deployment comes after several naval assets were repositioned near Venezuela last week already, which in turn was the first pivot following the Trump Administration's early August pivot which was 'aimed at addressing threats to US national security from specially designated narco-terrorist organizations in the region.' Part of the deployment will be 4000 Marines and P-8 Poseidon planes.

In response to the 50 million USD bounty on his head and the US military deployment Nicolas Maduro has threatened to mobilize 4.5 million Venezuelan Militia/ Milicia Bolivariana - a structure developed by Chavez and distinct from the regular army and Bolivarian National Guards.
