The Rest In Peace (RIP) Thread

" Felix Baumgartner, famed for his 2012 jump from the stratosphere, has died in a paragliding accident in Italy. He was 56."

I remember driving home quickly with the kids that day to watch him jump; I don't recall being that excited about watching something on TV, maybe ever. It seemed like a huge exploit.

Someone made a clip of it to Boards of Canada's "Dayvan Cowboy"

RIP

(edit: original video for Dayvan Cowboy featured footage from Col. Kittinger's original stratospheric jump in the 60s, so i thought this one was a nice tribute)

His "jump from space" was most probably fake.

Freaky I was just (couple of days ago) reading about Ozzy Osbourne and wondered how he was still alive after the massive amounts of drugs and alcohol he consumed and was still consuming... RIP regardless apparently he was a Christian(?) and the Satan thing was just an act.

Who knows, didn't know his wife was jewish btw.

Here's an article quoting an interview with him in 1992 where he says he is a Christian, but what he says is that he was christened as a Christian as a baby and attended Sunday School as a child, and that he believes in God. However, he said he never took much interest in Sunday School.

It's not for me to judge. Hopefully for his sake this was enough.

I saw Black Sabbath many times as a young lad. It would be fair to say I idolised them, along with a couple of other bands back then. It would also be fair to say that, along with most rock bands, they were greatly influential in me adopting a similarly degenerate, chaotic lifestyle, Ozzy in particular.

Ozzy, sadly, didn't seem to be reflective of this influence or the ramifications of his infamous exploits and prodigious drug use on impressionable teenagers, instead regaling in his debauchery and exploits. I could go further and write about the dark themes of Sabbath's and Ozzy's music, but that would be a whole essay, as would Sharon's part in this mythologising. After all it paid handsomely to do so. And there's something almost Sabbatean about Sharon's role in exploiting his sinful behaviour, reframing it as naughty and cute and selling it to the public.

When I saw the news yesterday, I immediately said a prayer for John Osborne, as I hope many thousands of repentant ex-fans did too. I also hope that in those last seconds he humbly and contritely called on the Lord and asked to be forgiven, as I hope I do too when my time comes.
