Their faith could also have been twisted or corrupted. There are many who claim to be Christians today but carry an incorrect type of faith, one which is fostered to please man and stroke his ego instead of pleasing God and denying one's self.

People on every continent and their respective countries are all materialistic to varying degrees. Europe and especially Western Europe have an extreme materialistic side that can only be compared to North America. Everything is about status and leisure or maintaining the image of such. They're set in their ways and traditions, which I guess makes each individual country unique and worth visiting but might make it a nightmare to actually go live there and be under the mercy of government administrations who rarely will call a spade a spade and even more rarely be allowed to do something about it. Most claim to be Catholics but that's only for traditional and social purposes. Once they step out of mass it's back to doing what they feel like doing. When you constantly live to flatter yourself or others (for whatever reason), you begin to lose sense of reality, common sense, and become less able to handle any constructive criticism. When your main goal is to please God and follow His word you remain grounded in reality and your own principles while keeping your ego in check. When people have a foundation in what God says is right and good (which never changes) vs what man decides is right and good (which constantly changes due the numerous factors) then the people can effectively begin to fight any tyranny or treason that pops up in their lands.

Remember, there are spiritual forces at work here. Physical, visible corrupt people may be allowing this to happen BUT they're being encouraged and pushed by the devil and his army. You can't fight a spiritual war with physical weapons. Strategize accordingly.
