The German word for that symbol is hakenkreuz, which translates to "hooked cross," so it is actually a Christian symbol, but the powers that be gave us a scary sanskrit word so we wouldn't recognize it properly.

It's funny how the mind pretty much automatically builds a small web of assumptions around just one word when it's presented to you in a certain way.

It's important to make the distinction between theological symbols and artifacts used for worhip and mere decorative items.
