Less Noticed Bible Passages

I couldn't find a good fit for this post so I made a new thread.

I notice sometimes that I come across passages I must have seen before, but I had forgotten. A lot of times these less known passages are very close to the most famous passages. The one that I just ran into was just after Jesus gave up the ghost, in Matthew 27.

51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;

52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,

53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.

54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.

Nobody ever talks about the many bodies of the saints that arose. Everybody knows about the veil, and the earthquakes, and the centurion, but I never hear about the many saints arising. These must have been like the other resurrections Christ did during his Earthly ministry, such as Lazarus. They were not eternal, so they would have died again. I wonder how long they lived?

It says many were raised. Imagine some of them living 30-40 years more, and everyone knowing they had been dead, probably for many years. Imagine someone you knew personally, who died 20 years ago, and now they're up living again!

This is by far the biggest miracle in the bible, other than Christ's actually eternal resurrection!

Nobody talks about this

This is not true, it's talked about every Pascha in the Orthodox Church. It's right in the refrain sung during Paschal liturgy:

"Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs bestowing life."

Acts 19: 13 But also some of the Jewish exorcists, who went from place to place, attempted to invoke over those who had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, “I implore you by Jesus whom Paul preaches.” 14Now seven sons of one named Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. 15And the evil spirit answered and said to them, “I recognize Jesus, and I know about Paul, but who are you?” 16And the man, in whom was the evil spirit, leaped on them, subdued all of them, and utterly prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. 17And this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who lived in Ephesus; and fear fell upon them all and the name of the Lord Jesus was being magnified.

Here's another that I ran across. It is ultimately about the old covenant with the Jews vs the new covenant under Jesus, but it makes an allegory of Abraham's son by a bondwoman vs his son by a freewoman. I ran across this recently and didn't even recognize it. I don't think people preach from this chapter as often. In comparison, the next chapter is on the fruits of the spirit, and is very well known. I suppose nobody wants to talk about bondwomen any more.

Galatians 4:22-31
22 For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.

23 But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise.

24 Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.

25 For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.

26 But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.

27 For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband.

28 Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.

29 But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.

30 Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.

31 So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.

This passage is actually about why the Apostolic spirit is so important, for even those who say they have faith and act in Christ's name are unable to cast out demons and perform miracles of the spirit. Only those with the spirit from the Pentecost are able to do such things.
