It's worth mentioning Estonia has a Russian minority of nearly 300,000. I think part of Russia's protests against "Nazism" by former Soviet nationalities relates to this, especially given that the Baltics had very willing Nazi collaborators (they were one of Europe's few territories to be declared
judenfrei). I don't know why Russian leaders bother, though. There's not a doubt in my mind that Western leaders would turn a blind eye to a genocide of Russians in Estonia and the Baltics. The Estonians obviously see them as a fifth column and are trying to make their lives as miserable as possible to get them to leave voluntarily (a silly plan since Russians can endure miserable conditions). Still, it helps to have a superpower backing you up, or else you'd be toast.
