I don't go for that kinda crap but that one gets me.....were we all just retarded kids or something?!
It may simply have been the way everyone else (including teachers and parents) pronounced the book titles, so as children we said it like that too without looking at the spelling too closely.
However the one about the mirrors has me genuinely confused, as it's not something that was advertised anywhere, or was even discussed except occasionally very briefly during car trips.
