Probably one of the most well known covered songs, where the cover is more well known than the original. The Man Who Sold the World.
It's very upsetting to me that the Nirvana version is the most famous. The guitar and vocals are just bad, don't sound good. The vocals are trash, Kurt Cobain is one of the most overrated vocalists of all time. Doesn't help that he seems to be making a Kermit the Frog impression throughout the song. All in all it just sounds pretentious to me.
The original Bowie one is good, probably the best and only good song on the album it's from. The issue is that it feels kind of empty and I feel it suffers from the thing where his old music had to have weird noises instead of instruments. I like how the vocals in it don't sound human, that was something completely missed on the Nirvana version.
My favorite is the Midge Ure version. It has its issues with sounding too "new wave" for my taste, but it nails a lot of the general idea with the original song. The instrumental is really good and the main reason it's my favorite. It was popularized by Metal Gear 5 and it fits the game so well that I can't listen to it without thinking of the in-game plot.
I feel this is what it would look like if it was made today or without its technological limitations (the original literally uses cork sounds). Bowie had similar instruments and general tone on his last album.
