I am woefully under-read on the subject of the Civil War and surrounding topics of Southern history and culture. For those of you more knowledgeable than me, what are some recommended texts? So much literature on the topic is undoubtedly the biased product of Yankee carpetbagger propaganda, so I don’t trust a general Internet search to yield something better than Dixiphobic screeds.
I’m particularly interested in those that draw on letters and other primary sources; if there is a David Irving of Dixie, let’s hear it. But in general, if you have books you enjoyed or found beneficial on the subject, feel free to suggest them.
