Good States to Live in the United States

I’ve had some Protestant women tell me “I’m practically a pagan that showers.”
Although I do see some humor in that, I'm almost embarrassed to have the Protestant badge upon hearing it. I don't know how I feel about kissing a painting with everyone in Church sometimes, but for such a young denomination to say that about Orthodoxy shows a little ignorance about Christianity's roots.

Were starting to veer into Protestant debate thread haha. Although I’m researching the Emerald coast more and more. Pensacola is in easy driving distance to Mobile and seems it has multiple orthodox parishes. New Orleans is only 3h away. Is Mobile a decent city if I need to drive in for larger city stuff?

If you keep going west from Florida and Alabama, the Mississippi Gulf Coast looks like it has potential too. Very affordable homes, beaches (although not as nice as Florida and Alabama), peaceful living, close to New Orleans, Mobile, Pensacola. Almost looks like going back in time a couple decades.

I haven't been to Mobile, but you can get beautiful houses for a fraction of the cost as most places. Picture those big Southern houses for $250-300k. Insane.

Mobile looks like a more laid back version of New Orleans, with a nice downtown. Baldwin County (in-between Mobile and Pensacola) is fantastic. Lots of nice towns and beaches. I think you can get a great quality of life in this entire Gulf area (Panama City all the way to Mississippi).

You hit the nail on the head. Mobile has some of the same cultural character as New Orleans, but more down to earth. However, crime is somewhat high (way better than NOLA though). Baldwin county is just across the bay, and many people are moving there. It's a real nice area with nice amenities and culture in the local area, and close to beaches and other Gulf Coast cities.

I had lived in Mobile 20 years ago for a couple of years. Back then you could rent a house for $200. It's full of Blacks like all big cities in the South, I guess. Lots of crime by Blacks, Mobile is majority Black now. The locals were hateful of anyone not from there, like someone had put it, they hate you if you're born 2 hours away, say in NOLA, that's too far/you're an outsider, they dk if you're white they just hate outsiders, fat too. Very cliquish and corrupt and many people hostile towards churches that aren't of their own denomination. Horribly hot humid climate, and no-see-ums biting outside, can't peacefully sit outside. Giant roaches size of a mouse, they literally ate a baby bird in my backyard. I guess this is as close to Africa as it can get, older time South Africa if you compare US states with countries. As a bonus, you might get hit by both a hurricane and a tornado, or get eaten by a shark.

It's very black, but southern blacks are good people; any issues with black people almost exclusively happen in northern cities like New York, Detroit, Chicago, etc.
Tell this to my buddy who got robbed at gunpoint by them right near local University. Or another one whose car they stoned cause he made a mistake of driving through their area. Or others who got their houses robbed by them, they used to pull up a truck and load everything from the house including furniture. Africa-o-bama fully meets definition of a 3rd world hole.
And a lot of crime that happens there is never registered so it's not in fbi stats.

Regarding that region, I recall I knew someone who grew up in the woods of white corner of Southern Louisiana close to a big lake, the pines are pretty nice there and air smells good with them, lots of places to fish, hunt toads, etc. No blacks there. Because of French cajuns, in part, probably, that area felt less inbred than Africabama, but still people are very insular in this region and anyone moving there will be forever outsider. The climate is terribly hot.

I thought it was bad with Colorado mountain town residents hating on Denver/Front Range, and Denver hating on people from other states.

But that's way worse!

This story isn't the South, but a conference for a huge industry was held at a hotel in Baltimore. A couple of black teenagers mugged one of the attendees. Apparently the victim was actually bigger/stronger than the teenagers and he contemplated pushing them off the wharf. But, they could be armed, so he just gave them his wallet and iphone. He had no cash, he cancelled his cards, disabled the iphone, so they didn't get anything but a gift card.

The conference brought in millions of revenue for that hotel, surrounding restaurants, etc. The service workers were of course mostly black and the conference attendees are loaded and tip really well. Now there's no chance the conference will return to Baltimore.

Black people in Baltimore bite the hand that feeds them.

I've spent many years in Mobile, and this doesn't ring true to me at all. I find the locals very welcoming, and I haven't been a victim of a crime down here. There is a large black section of town, and I suppose I would avoid walking through there at night, but there's nothing in those areas to attract me anyway. In places that I would want to go, I've always felt safe.

Also, while it is hot and humid, so is the rest of the south. Mobile is typical in that regard. Same with insects.

I haven't personally seen major crime yet, but I did recently take an excursion to Birmingham, Alabama, and most of it did definitely seem a lot rougher than the northern Alabama areas that I based my original statement off of. And it was like there were no whites in the city at all, except of course in the suburbs.
There are reasons Alabama is still toward the bottom of most rankings of states, even if a tad better than Mississippi.
