I get it. We have private property rights. If I have the money to outbid a museum to buy a Tintoretto or an Edward Hopper, and then go home and toss it in the fireplace, more power to me.

Apart from the fact that the diary has some pages in ink from a ball point pen which didn't exist pre 1946, the original diary also has handwriting from at least 4 different people, pages ripped out, and other pages glued in. When the copyright expired recently after 75 years after her death and was about to become a public domain item, the copyright was miracously transferred into her father (who died much later and therefore has a later copyright expiration date). Her father made millions selling the publishing rights to his dead daughter's (alleged) diary in the decades after the war.
This is what the original looks like, which very few people have ever bothered to examine.
