Yikes! This is brutal!
It is, but it isn't. The subject of the picture is the 15 year old daughter Lorrie. Everything else is just the setting. She hasn't seen her father for over 5 years and this is her natural reaction captured in the moment.

I watched this on TV back in 1973. I was just a kid, and I don't remember the circumstances. I suppose I was home and they cut into regular programming to show the released POWs arriving at the airport and greeting their families. The yikes part is how the wife was able to clean him out in spite of the circumstances. How merciless she was. How unfair the courts were in her favor, excusing fraud on her part in addition to the infidelity.
On the one hand, I know women break up with soldiers and send Dear John letters, and I know wives can be bloodthirsty monsters in divorce, but seeing that juxtaposed with this picture of the joyous reunion is pretty intense. Also, the idea that the shameless wife peddled her memorabilia from this event on a TV show. Good grief!
