Creating this thread to cover major weather events in the US like the current winter storm, tornado outbreaks, etc which have a significant impact but aren't extremely one off events (such as the NC flooding).
With the winter storm rolling in, I'm always amazed by the obvious lessons people need to learn. My city made national news footage because of dramatic footage of idiots trying to drive on the ice; thinking that because they have a large 4WD vehicle it was fine. Instead they spun out and had to be rescued from the median ditch.
It's also amazing how many people have zero preparation for such an event. Reports from both our local homeschool group and the farmers/homesteader group indicated that shopping was an absolute mad house with people buying everything they needed last minute.
We had no such panic buying at my house because we already have everything prepped to camp out for a month or two with no power and no advance notice of any disruption.

Does anyone have any information about Hurricane Helene hitting Florida? I'm not hearing any news. I've heard that the storm has stalled right off the coast and cell towers are down. I have friends in the area and I can't get through to them. I also don't want to clog up the comm lines.
