^We're kind of at a crossroads, with the new tech being a double-edged sword. As well, their power is being held in check by the fact that they don't control the world's largest economy, China, and (to a lesser extent) Russia. We've seen for example China destroy the top-down AI business model of OpenAI and Project Stargate. Without that outside force, their chances of setting up and locking down their control grid would have been a lot higher.
