Firearms discussion

So, I did a quick search and couldnt find any firearms threads.

Please discuss your firearms and any shooting you do here.

I am looking to purchase a new firearm (yes, we can do that in the UK).

I am looking for a good all round 9mm, that is also going to be accurate on the range (where I will mostly shoot it).

Cost is not an issue, but I dont want a gold plated, diamond encrusted, drug dealers dream piece.

Bear in mind when recommending something, home defense using firearms is illegal in the UK, so that doesnt matter to me. Unless, I was cleaning my firearm at 3am when the criminals entered my house and that was the only weapon I had to hand, your Honour. *cough cough.

I'd get a Smith and Wesson M&P full size or the compact 15 rounder or the Shield OR Plus.

I've got all models (and prefer the shield for daily carry in the summer or the full size in the winter or if I'm wearing a blazer.

Also got a couple sigs and the p365 is what my wife carries every day.

It has been recommended to me, and I have looked at a SIG also.

CZ are meant to be good, but they look too.... skinny for me.

Problem with the UK is, I cant really try it out before hand, cause gunshops dont have a range, so I would have to find a gun club with one, or someone with one, to lend it to me for a shoot to try it first. Thats probably why there are a lot of second hand guns for sale here.

I might just go crazy and get a Webley in .355.

Did see a 10mm silver Smith and Wesson for sale the other day, but I believe you have to wear a white suit with only a t-shirt and sandals to be able to shoot it well.

Just a little side note: a few weeks ago my dad asked my missus why I shoot so much nowadays, she told him "In case Kamala wins"!

Also, everyone feel free to fill this thread with your own shooting queries, stories and gun porn.

How experienced are you with shooting? A 10mm is a whole lot of pistol. Vs a 9mm with new bullet tech is virtually same terminal ballistics.

I was joking about the 10mm, Im not Sonny Crockett.

I have shot for over 30 years, from school, to the army, to civilian life.

I have quite a few firearms, running from a tricked out (as we say Gucci) Lantac M4 variant, to my replica Colt Single Action Army. No shotguns though.

I live in the UK however, and that means there are some...... regulations you must navigate in regards to firearms ownership.

The S+W M&P 2.0 does look like pretty much what I am looking for. And it was already recommended to me. I will see if someone at my club has one and take it for a test drive.

People get in arguments over which caliber is the best all the time. Here's the answer: the best caliber is the one you can shoot the best with.

Personally, I carry a Glock 22 everywhere. 40. cal.

Some ranges will let you rent firearms so you can try out and see which one tickles your fancy. Once you make a choice, train with it.

I put a couple thousand rounds through a Walther P99 without a single malfunction when I still owned handguns. Its basically a glock but the German engineers finished the job. Ended up dumping all my handguns... as a Canadian I know all about pain in the ass gun laws. More trouble here than theyre worth. I'm a big short barreled pump 12 guage fan. All you really need for short range "bear" defense, if youre not looking to conceal or carry.

Thats totally fair but modern hollow point bullet tech has made it negligible between which caliber out performs the other. A 147g +p 9mm performs in line with 40 cal.

All handguns are weak compared to rifle rounds. So you need to be very proficient with training. 9mm is cheaper than 40 so you generally afford to shoot more with that caliber.

Not poopooing the Glock 22. Great weapon and tons of folks have proven it to be an effective tool for servicing targets.

I personally don't care for Glock and prefer the Smith and Wesson due to the grip angle mirroring a 1911 more than the canted wrist the glocks put you in.

The best caliber IMO is the most commonly available one.
Doesn't matter how good the round is if You can't get it on the spot. Especially when we're talking about foreign countries, where gun stores are uncommon.

44 Magnum will stop a bear. That'd be my go to for that sort of work.
44mag certainly delivers a punch but as a rimmed cartridge it’s limited to revolvers/lever guns (Ruger Deerfield not withstanding). 10mm has the virtue of being rimless and being loaded to almost magnum pressures. I carry a G40 (long slide 10mm ) in bear/moose country since I’ll have 15 rounds immediately available without reloading. Where with a .44mag pistol I’d be limited to 6. A 220gr 10mm hardcast lead bullet cooking along at 1200fps is big enough medicine for anything jn North America. 15+1 (plus a spare mag) sitting on my chest makes me feel a lot more comfortable alone in the mountains.
