Better Call Saul Discussion Thread

I thought we needed a thread on Better Call Saul since it was such a popular show. I recently finished watching this series for the second time and was amazed by how much I loved it, even though I usually don't like shows about lawyers. The character of Jimmy McGill was fascinating.

At first, the audience is led to like Jimmy because he's scrappy and resourceful. But as the series goes on, Jimmy has completely lost his moral compass. Even though his brother treats him badly, there comes a point where Jimmy goes too far, especially in his relationship with Howard. While Chuck deserved some of what came to him, it seemed over the top for Jimmy to go after Howard the way he did. This is when we start to question if we're really rooting for Jimmy or just watching his downfall. By the last season, Jimmy has almost lost his soul.

Many people who have seen both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul might say Breaking Bad is better. That may be true, but Better Call Saul was my favorite. I'm not saying it's a better show, but I liked it more because of the characters, especially Jimmy. Howard was also very interesting—more so than any character in Breaking Bad. He was complex; you couldn't fully root for or against him. He lived somewhere in the greys, where one week you sympathized with his condition and the next week you're wondering why he's treating Jimmy so badly.

Are there others here who like Better Call Saul more than Breaking Bad? Let me know your thoughts on the series.

I could go either way on them, both good shows....smart shows in similar ways but still very different. Only BCS started off so slow it was painful and I think that's why so few people watched it compared to breaking bad even though it was just as good in the end if not better, the whole starting arch about his brother was barely watchable until the end of it. I know multiple people who gave up on it and never came back during the first season.

It's a bit weird that a character by the name of Jim McGill would call himself "Saul Goodman".

I loved how both shows were primarily about the relationship between two lead characters, but in very different circumstances. Made even better by the supporting characters all being so unique and great actors. I don't tend to have a favourite as the last couple of seasons of Saul' ramped up to become it's own unique and thrilling ride. Both are like a brother or a sister TV show, built from the same DNA of great writing and performers.

Kim was a standout character for me through the whole show. I loved her character arc and obviously her performance... but Lalo stole every scene he was in. One of the best villians on a TV show i've seen.

I will say one thing though, it did fall victim to some globo homo garbage that tainted it a bit for me. The scene where the Mexican border smugglers were white guys.....come on who wrote that in with a straight face?

Strangely, I thought the black and white scenes with Saul were some of the best of the series. For some reason, I liked seeing him working that crappy job at Cinnabons and hiding out. What was never revealed (at least I don't remember it) was where he got the emergency diamond supply.

Slippin Jimmy was awesome. The actress theat played Kim gave such stellar performances throughout the series. But the rediculous cons that Were created made me laugh so much and the show was so intelligent. I loved when he was selling burner phones out of his trunk and showing up in those track suits. So rediculous, I was in tears laughing at so many of his schemes and cons. Still give the nod overall to Breaking Bad, but Better Call Saul was an outstanding series.
